CHAPTER TWENTY
âWe enjoy the night, the darkness, where we can do things that arenât acceptable in the light. The night is when we slake our thirstâ â William Hill.

Heâs coming⦠Heâs comingâ¦
That phrase kept replaying over and over again inside my head, filling me with pure fear. The room was completely dark; the lights had gone out after flickering. My eyes took a few seconds to adjust to my surroundings until I could see a silhouette in the corner of the room.
I shrieked when a warm hand held mine.
âHey, itâs meâ, Drake soothed, caressing my palm gently âitâs okay, Ann, breatheâ My lungs ached, craving air. âIâm here, and you are safeâ I wanted to believe his words, but I knew I was not safe. I would never be safe. Drake squeezed my hand. Madnessâ venomous words hit me:
âTouch him again, and I will kill him!â
Sweet Madness
Instinctively, I pushed Drakeâs hands away. I could tell Drake was frowning at me in the dark. I could feel him staring at me.
âAnn, everything is going to be fine. This happens all the time. The electricity goes out very often around here. Itâs probably because of the snowstorm,â he explained softly as if he knew I was starting to panic. I swallowed the lump in my throat, trying to regain my composure. Freaking out was not going to solve anything.
âCan youâ¦â I trailed off as an icy wind passed through the half-opened window. I shivered, âDo you have candles?â
âYes,â Drake replied. The bed trembled as he got to his feet. âI will go get them. Stay hereâ I heard his footsteps towards the door. Panic made my stomach twist
painfully.
âNo, I donât want to be aloneâ, I whispered, removing the covers. Instantly the cold hit my bare flesh. The summer dress I wore was inappropriate for the cold weather, but I guess that was all Drake had. I got out of bed, shivering.
âAnn, stay in bedâ, Drake sounded concerned. âYou still have a fever!â
âI canât be alone. Iâm scaredâ I was nothing but frank. I felt vulnerable when I was by myself. It was like Madness sensed when I was alone and decided to show up. Drake sighed in defeat.
Sweet Madness
âAlright, just put this onâ he offered me something I couldnât see well. I grasped it unsure, realising it was a jacket. I put it on; its warmth encased my upper body, making me feel better. It smelt like Drake, but I wasnât complaining since he smelt amazing.
We headed out of the room; the dim light coming through the windows was the only thing guiding us. I was following Drake through the hallway when he stopped abruptly. I crashed into his back, and my nose throbbed painfully. âOw!â Drake turned to me. âAre you okay? Iâm sorry.â
âIâm fine,â I lied, holding my nose.
We reached what I assumed was the back door of the house. Drake told me he would go to the shed to get some flashlights and candles. I told him I would wait for him at the door.
